The brewery came before the whisky
The Locher family's Appenzell brewing story and the origins of Säntis Malt should not be compressed into one foundation date. Brauerei Locher dates the family's acquisition of its Appenzell brewery to 1886. This establishes a company history, not an 1886 whisky launch. Understanding Swiss whisky means following both inherited brewing knowledge and the later decision to distil cereal spirit.
1999: production begins
According to the producer, Karl Locher began Säntis Malt whisky distillation in 1999, after Swiss rules on producing spirits from cereals changed. The account highlights the use of historic oak beer casks and spring water from the Alpstein. These are producer-reported production and maturation practices: they should be cited as such, rather than converted into unsupported technical guarantees about flavours or ageing.
2002: product launch
The producer's chronology distinguishes the first commercial releases in 2002 from the start of whisky production in 1999. Both dates have editorial value. A distillation date, a release date and a company founding date describe different milestones, and a historical timeline should retain all three alongside their source.
A 2013 photograph, and its limits
Adrian Michael's August 2013 photograph of a Säntis Malt bottle is an actual dated product image. It is not a photograph of the copper stills, the brewery floor or the historical casks, and it does not document the appearance of the first 2002 release. WHISKAVIA keeps the photographer, Commons source and Creative Commons licence beside the image, and will not pass it off as our own photography.
What further research could establish
Historic photographs of the original beer barrels, dated Swiss production regulations, site-specific records, and period bottling catalogues could deepen this account. Present tourist access and production capacity should be checked separately. The larger story is the relationship between brewing traditions and a distinct contemporary whisky-making decision—not an invented uninterrupted whisky history beginning in 1886.
