Japan: what the name on a label means

Standards, attribution and a more precise way to read Japanese whisky.

A defined labelling framework

Japan's National Tax Agency describes the Japanese spirits makers' voluntary standards for labelling Japanese whisky. These industry standards began in April 2021, with a transitional period for certain existing labels ending in March 2024. The standard is an important piece of context, but it should not be confused with a universal worldwide geographical indication.

Origin is more than presentation

A Japanese brand name, bottle design or corporate headquarters does not independently verify where all distillation and maturation took place. A proper dossier distinguishes the brand owner, the distillery, production records and the requirements of the relevant label standard.

Keep the evidence attached

When WHISKAVIA describes a Japanese expression, the source and date of its actual origin claim should remain attached. This prevents an attractive visual story from becoming a substitute for documented provenance.
